Shumen Municipality sent a letter to the Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov with a request to save water from the Ticha Dam. This is being done in connection with the published schedule on the ministry's website for the use of water from complex and significant dams in August 2025, the press center of Shumen Municipality announced.
The letter to the Minister states that the dam is among the largest, providing drinking water to three municipalities - Veliki Preslav, Shumen and Targovishte. This includes serving a total of about 200,000 residents.
With rising temperatures and climate change, the water in the dam is permanently decreasing. The dam has the lowest available volume among the twelve dams for drinking and domestic water supply, the letter says. According to data published in the Daily Bulletin on the State of Waters as of 8:00 a.m. on August 1, 2025, for the “Ticha” dam, the available volume has decreased to 47.63% of the total, and the useful volume - to 39.92%. The average daily inflow to the dam is 0.075 m3/sec., and the average daily flow - 3,043 m3/sec.
The municipality appeals to the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) to save water from the Ticha dam for irrigation, so as to maintain the balance between drinking needs and irrigation by crop producers.
According to the published schedule on the ministry's website for the use of water from complex and significant dams as of August 1, 2025: the Ticha dam has a total volume of 312 million cubic meters of water, with the available volume being 149 million cubic meters and the usable volume being 109 million cubic meters, which is 6,530 million cubic meters of water, of which 2,300 million cubic meters m for drinking and domestic water supply of the cities of Shumen and Veliki Preslav, the press center also informed.
On July 26, the repair of the damaged weld on the water supply line from the “Ticha“ dam was successfully completed, due to which Shumen, “Makak“ district, the villages of Panayot Volov and Belokopitovo were without water.
