Bulgarian medicine suffered a heavy loss with the passing of Prof. Dr. Tatyana Penkova-Chervenyakova - one of the most respected infectious disease specialists in the country. She died on August 10, 2025 after a short-term oncological illness, her family announced.
Prof. Chervenyakova was the executive director of the Specialized Hospital for Active Treatment of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases "Prof. Ivan Kirov" in Sofia for more than 17 years. Under her leadership, the medical institution became a leading center for diagnostics, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.
Prof. Chervenyakova was a long-time lecturer at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Parasitology and Tropical Medicine at the Medical University - Sofia. Since 2003, she has held the position of National Consultant on Infectious Diseases at the Ministry of Health.
Prof. Chervenyakova's scientific and clinical interests were related to viral hepatitis, acute respiratory viral diseases and childhood infectious diseases. She played a key role in the fight against various epidemics in Bulgaria, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of particular importance to Dunavmost readers is the fact that Prof. Chervenyakova graduated from the Mathematical High School in Ruse in 1972, before continuing her education in medicine in Sofia.
The funeral service for Prof. Tatyana Chervenyakova will take place on August 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the "St. Sophia" church in the capital. The funeral will be held in the village of Prolesha.
Prof. Chervenyakova leaves behind a significant legacy in Bulgarian medicine and will be remembered for her selfless dedication to patients and medical science.
