The changes in student fees were dictated by the Higher Education Act, not by the Minister of Education. This was stated by public figure Prof. Stoyan Denchev in the studio of "Denyat ON AIR" on Bulgaria ON AIR. According to him, Minister Krasimir Valchev reacted adequately and made sure that the fees were reduced and bearable.
"Parents would have lost their money, but still give their children an education. It wouldn't be fair - such high fees are comparable to the most prestigious universities in the world," commented Prof. Denchev.
He emphasized that education is embedded in the essence of the Bulgarian and that the reaction of the minister, who managed to force the Council of Ministers and the National Assembly to change the fees, was correct.
According to the public figure, in secondary education it is most evident who has what knowledge. "There can be no snobbery - to give the son, the daughter of so-and-so a higher grade. It is simply not possible," he explained.
Prof. Denchev pointed to the deplorable results of the PISA tests as an example of the problems in the education system. "Our students learn certain knowledge, but they cannot apply it in practice," he emphasized.
According to the expert, Bulgarian children are no stupider than those who study at world universities, but lack motivation. "Some of the students, when you ask them why they don't come to lectures, say they are working," revealed Prof. Denchev.
He believes that studying a foreign language is important, but it is more of an obligation of the student himself and his parents. "If a student wanted to improve his knowledge, he could do it independently. Language gives culture, it gives you the opportunity to touch knowledge that you cannot find in the Bulgarian language," he pointed out.
In the interview, Prof. Denchev also commented on the meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Alaska. "Trump wanted to end the war in a few days. He found the formula and managed to get into Vladimir Putin's heart, they brought their positions closer," said the public figure.
Regarding the euro, he believes that there are no problems with the currency, but there is a problem with the process of its introduction. "The problems consist in the loss of time - when the state announced that it would seek a convergent report, laws should have been adopted even then to reduce speculation," concluded Prof. Denchev.
