In the past year, nearly 28 thousand people in Bulgaria were accused of committing various crimes. Of these, 80% were convicted, with more and more of those convicted receiving conditional sentences instead of effective sentences. The most frequently convicted are persons between the ages of 30 and 39, and the most common crimes are transport, summarizes NOVA.
Crimes against the person such as murder, bodily harm and rape account for less than 10% of all crimes. Last year, 70 people were sentenced for murder or attempted murder, 700 for bodily harm, 28 for rape and the same number for human trafficking. The rest were convicted of documentary crimes, crimes against the economy, against marriage, family and youth, against public order, against civil rights, and the least convicted were for crimes against the financial, tax and social security system.
80% of those convicted received a prison sentence, most often for up to 6 months and between 6 months and 1 year. 10% were punished with probation, 6% - with a fine. 99 people were publicly reprimanded and one received life imprisonment.
The majority of those convicted are between the ages of 30 and 39. Next are young convicts between the ages of 18 and 24, who make up every fifth convict. The percentage of convicts between the ages of 40 and 49 is similar, and it is the lowest among juvenile convicts between the ages of 14 and 17, who represent 3% of all convicts.
Almost half of those convicted are for general crimes, with the largest share among them being transport crimes – nearly 70%. This is followed by crimes against property, the most common of which are theft of property, again 70%. Those convicted of crimes against the activities of state bodies, public organizations and persons performing public functions are 11%, and the most common crime of this type is illegal border crossing.
