On today's name day, December 13, many names are celebrated that were borne by brave Christians who died in the name of the Christian faith.
After the emperors Diocletian and Maximian received information from their spies that the number of Christians was rapidly increasing in Armenia and Cappadocia, they immediately sent two of their most loyal dignitaries, Agricolaus and Lysias, to restore order by condemning the Christians.
The investigation of Agricolaus and Lysias established that in addition to St. Presbyter Auxentius, there were also Christians among the military leaders. Such was Eustratius, who himself admitted that he had replaced the ignorant belief in idols with the true faith in Christ. The judges ordered the military leader Eustratius to remove his military decorations and insignia. The soldiers subjected him to torture. The Lord preserved the life of Saint Eustratius despite the inhuman wounds they inflicted on him.
Another man named Mardarius also loudly declared that he was a Christian. He was also captured and thrown into prison.
One of the newly proclaimed martyrs is Saint Eugene, but this happened on May 23, 1996. He was a young man born in 1977. His relics are miraculous, so the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him as a new martyr.
On December 13, we also honor the memory of St. virgin Lucia (Lucia), who glorified God in the Sicilian city of Syracuse, along with the memory of St. German, who was born in Orthodox Russia and preached the word of God in the Aleutian Islands and Alaska. He died blessedly in 1837.
Name days are celebrated by: Evstratiy, Evstrati, Stati, Statko, Evgeni, Evgeniy, Evgeniya, Zhenya, Geno, Gencho, Gendo, Lucia, German.
