One of the Apollo 8 crew members, William Anders, died in a plane crash, Fox News reported.
„Multiple social media posts as well as messages from family and friends indicate that Anders was flying the plane at the time of the accident,” the statement said.
The plane crash happened in the San Juan Islands in the state of Washington near the border with Canada. Anders was 90 years old, judging by the footage distributed in the media and social networks, the plane he was flying probably made a “dead circle” above the water and fell as a result of a steep "dive".
The local sheriff said the plane was an older model that crashed into the water and sank. According to media reports, it is an aircraft that was once in service with the Air Force.
Anders was a member of the Apollo 8 crew and walked around the moon for the first time in history, taking the famous photo of Earth rising above the moon.
