The coach of the Polish national team Michal Probiej commented on the decision of striker Robert Lewandowski to end his career in the national team.
"I didn't have my phone with me, but when I returned to my room, I saw that Robert had called. I called him back at 21:59 and asked him what was going on. He said that he would like to give up the captaincy himself and announce it personally. I told him that it wouldn't happen because the decision was mine. Then we published the information on the official website of the Polish Football Federation.
Later on social media I learned that Lewandowski had refused to play for the national team. He is an exceptional player whom I respect very much. Nobody has closed the door to him, there has been no talk of leaving the national team. I want to emphasize this. I wish Robert all the best, but for me the most important thing is the national team, not who trains it.
The main thing is the good of the team. I understand that I made a very difficult decision regarding an exceptional player who has achieved more than anyone else. But football life sometimes requires you to look the other way and choose what is best for the team.
I believe that I made the right decision, which was necessary at that moment. I am open to dialogue, I do not hold grudges against anyone. In football and in life you cannot be offended, because anything is possible. If there is a desire on both sides, an agreement can always be reached. The doors to the national team are never closed“, Proveda said at a press conference.
It was previously reported that Lewandowski had refused to play for the Polish national team due to a loss of confidence in the head coach.
