Google declares war on apps that "drain your phone's battery - 1

After months of threats and preparation, Google has finally moved from words to action in its attempt to extend the life of our smartphones. Android users have already started to notice direct warning signs in the official Play Store, pointing the finger at software with an unjustifiably high appetite for energy. If an app has a habit of "waking up" while your screen is off, Google will not hesitate to inform you about it even before you have pressed the install button.

The basis of this move is the fight against the so-called "partial wake locks". This is a mechanism that allows the processor to continue working even when the device is at rest. Although in certain cases this is a technological necessity, many developers abuse the feature, turning their apps into invisible consumers that drain the battery in the background. Now Google sets a clear threshold - if you cross it, you get a public stigma for excessive consumption.

The company's strategy is twofold and aims to hit the "criminals" where it hurts the most. On the one hand, this is direct pressure on software engineers to optimize their code so that they don't fall off the recommended content lists. On the other hand, the end user gets a powerful tool for protection. You will no longer have to guess why your phone is at 20% in the early afternoon - the truth will be written in black and white on the page of the relevant app.

In the long run, this initiative promises a healthier ecosystem in which efficiency is more important than an aggressive presence in the phone's memory. It would be even better if other aspects of our digital everyday life were regulated with such transparency! For now, however, we can be happy that at least our batteries will get a well-deserved breath of air from the unscrupulous “energy vampires“.
