Scientists have embedded a fully functional touchscreen directly into clothing (VIDEO) - 1

The border between digital devices and our everyday wardrobe is about to be completely erased thanks to an extraordinary achievement of engineering thought. Researchers from the National University of Singapore have presented the development of a new generation of textiles, which integrates a fully functional and flexible sensor material capable of visualizing images and video, recognizing touches in real time and supporting full wireless connectivity. Despite its high technological complexity, the fabric fully retains the properties of ordinary clothing – it is elastic, breathable and can be washed without risk to electronics.

At the heart of this technological magic is the precise weaving of specialized fibers with a thickness of only about a millimeter, which combine microchips, LEDs and a touch-sensitive layer. Every time the user touches or presses the fabric, the internal electrical circuit closes a contact, and the intelligent system instantly detects the exact position of the contact and activates the corresponding pixels. The creation of this interactive display requires extreme precision: over 5,000 microchips are embedded in the test prototype, united by an impressive more than 20,000 microscopic electrical connections. The demonstration panel relies on a total of 54 pixel-laden fibers, each of which contains 96 individual LEDs.

The technical parameters of the textile screen impress with their practicality. With compact dimensions of 168 by 105 millimeters, the panel provides a resolution of 96 by 54 pixels, supports a full 8-bit color palette and works with a smooth refresh rate of 30 frames per second. The system also has a high degree of reliability, supporting the recognition of multiple simultaneous touches, with the possible damage or breakage of a single fiber in no way disrupting the functionality of the rest of the screen.

In addition to the visual display, the flexible material can be equipped with additional functional threads, including a miniature microphone, speaker, as well as sensors for motion, temperature, ambient light and magnetic orientation. Although developers still treat the technology as an early research prototype, its potential to transform not only consumer electronics but also medicine, rescue operations, and smart clothing is more than promising.
