The man accused of trying to kill Donald Trump on a golf course in Florida last year tried to stab himself in the neck with a pen shortly after he was found guilty on all charges yesterday, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
Police officers quickly surrounded him and dragged him from the courtroom.
The jury, made up of five men and seven women, found Ryan Routh guilty on all charges after about two hours of deliberation.
The jury was leaving the courtroom after the man was found guilty when Routh grabbed a pen from his desk and tried to stab himself in the neck.
The pen with which Rout attempted to stab himself was flexible, designed to be unwieldy by detainees, so he did not pierce his skin or injure himself, a person familiar with the matter said.
As officers led Rout from the courtroom, his daughter, Sarah Rout, began screaming, "Dad, I love you, don't do anything. I'm going to get you out of here. He didn't hurt anyone.".
She continued to scream as her father was led from the courtroom, claiming the case against him was rigged. She was escorted out of the courtroom and later waited outside with her brother, Adam Rout, for the motorcade that would take their father away.
The judge announced that Rout's sentence would be handed down on December 18 at 9:30 a.m. He could receive a life sentence, the AP reported.
