Tehran: US talk of nuclear diplomacy is a complete sham - 1

Iran's Foreign Ministry on Thursday described as a "fraud" the US claim that it wants a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program, "Reuters".

US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff said on Wednesday that Washington is holding talks with Iran and that the US has a "desire" to reach a lasting solution to the dispute.

The United States, its European allies and Israel accuse Tehran of using its nuclear program to cover up its efforts to develop a nuclear weapons capability. Iran says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

"America's claim of wanting diplomacy is nothing but a deception and a blatant contradiction; one cannot simultaneously bomb a country while engaging in diplomatic negotiations and talk about diplomacy," said ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei.

Before the 12-day Iran-Israel war in June, which Washington joined by striking key nuclear sites, Tehran and Washington held five rounds of nuclear talks but faced major stumbling blocks such as uranium enrichment on Iranian soil, which Western powers want to bring to zero to minimize any risk of weapons deployment.

On August 28, Britain, France and Germany began a 30-day process to reimpose UN sanctions - known as a "snapback" - which ends on September 27, accusing Tehran of not complying with a 2015 deal with world powers aimed at preventing it from developing nuclear weapons.

The European powers have offered to delay the reimposition of sanctions by up to six months to allow for negotiations on a long-term deal if Iran restores access to UN nuclear inspectors, addresses concerns about its stockpile of enriched uranium and begins talks with the United States.

An Iranian source told Reuters that "several messages have been conveyed to Washington to resume talks through mediators in recent weeks, but the Americans have not responded".

During a meeting with anti-war activists in New York on Wednesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said: "In what language should we say that we are ready to respect the framework if you respect it too? What kind of negotiations are they if they ask us to keep our commitments while they trample on theirs?

In an earlier meeting, he said that the return of international sanctions would be "unpleasant, but not the end of the road".

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Tuesday that talks with Washington did not serve Tehran's interests.
