Sydney shooting: 20 injured after man fires over 100 bullets into street - 1

A man opened fire indiscriminately on a busy Sydney street, injuring 20 people, reports Agence France-Presse, reports News.bg.

Police have ruled out a link to terrorism or organised crime, saying the gunman fired randomly at passing cars and police officers late at night.

New South Wales acting police chief Stephen Parry said between 50 and 100 shots were fired.

A large police contingent arrived at the scene, cordoned off the area and entered a building where they arrested the 60-year-old gunman. Two rifles were recovered from the scene.

The gunman was taken to hospital for treatment of wounds sustained during his arrest. He has not been charged at this time.

Police said one man was taken to hospital in serious condition with a gunshot wound, and 19 others were treated at the scene for injuries from shrapnel or broken glass. Several were taken to hospital.

Mass shootings are rare in Australia, which has banned automatic and semi-automatic weapons since 1996. The restrictions were introduced after the Port Arthur massacre, which left 35 people dead.

The country has experienced several isolated gun incidents in recent years:

  • In August, suspect Desi Freeman went on the run after being charged with the murder of two police officers and has yet to be caught.

  • In 2022, six people, including two police officers, were killed in a shooting near Wiyambila, Queensland.
