The leaders of Britain, France and Germany said today that they had agreed in a telephone conversation to work to use the value of frozen Russian assets to support the armed forces of Ukraine, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
In a statement published by the German government, the leaders of the three countries said they would do this in cooperation with the United States. "We are ready to work, in a coordinated manner, to use frozen Russian sovereign assets to support the armed forces of Ukraine and thus bring Russia to the negotiating table," the statement by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said.
“We intend to do this in close cooperation with the United States,” the statement added.
The three leaders also welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement and pledged to resume humanitarian aid deliveries as soon as it enters into force.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier on Monday that he had held talks with European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, Reuters reported.
The two discussed ways to "fairly use" of frozen Russian assets in support of Ukraine.
"We discussed how to ensure the fair use of frozen Russian assets to protect ourselves from Russia's war and help restore life in Ukraine. There are solutions on how this can be done," the Ukrainian president said. Zelensky called on European countries to show more political will to support Kiev through the funds from Russian assets.
