Boat carrying 29 migrants crashes off Greek island of Chios, two women dead

A boat carrying migrants crashed into rocks off the island of Chios. The boat was carrying 29 people who had set off from the Turkish coast.

The victims are two women, five other passengers are hospitalized in serious condition. Border guard teams and the European agency "Frontex" participated in the rescue operation, Greek authorities reported.

Local fishermen commented that it was madness to travel in a wooden boat in such a sea storm.

Another hundred migrants who entered Greek waters near the island of Crete are being held in a closed camp without the right to leave.

The new law on illegal entry into Greece is in effect. Those who arrive are banned from moving around the country and must leave within three months. If they refuse, a two-year prison sentence will come into effect. The processing of applications for political asylum has been temporarily suspended, the migration ministry stressed.

The police have broken up a network for illegally producing fake documents that were being sold to migrants for 8,000 euros. Five of the organizers have been arrested in Athens.
