Russia threatens retaliation against EU over possible seizure of its frozen assets - 1

The Russian State Duma adopted a resolution today, according to which any seizure of Russian sovereign assets by the European Union must be followed by legal action against Belgium and the depository Euroclear, in whose accounts the frozen funds are located. This was reported by Reuters, BTA reports.

In the document sent to Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, the deputies also propose using assets of non-residents from "hostile countries" to compensate for possible damage that Russia would suffer as a result of such actions by the EU.

The European Commission has already presented a mechanism that would allow member states to use in practice about 185 billion euros out of a total of 210 billion euros in frozen Russian state assets in Europe. The funds would be used to provide so-called reparations loans to Ukraine, without the amounts being officially confiscated, Reuters specifies.
