The United States is considering the possibility of transferring Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as a security guarantee if a peace agreement is reached, The Washington Post reports, citing sources.
American officials close to the negotiations have said that the administration of President Donald Trump understands that "security guarantees for Ukraine are still not convincing enough" in the plan proposed by the United States. In particular, Trump may increase the maximum allowable size of the Ukrainian army or remove this clause altogether. "And to strengthen deterrence after the war, officials are considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles if a peace agreement is reached," the newspaper writes.
The supply of these missiles is seen as an alternative to the deployment of military forces of European countries in Ukraine, which Russia opposes, the sources of the publication explain. Washington believes that Kiev will not use these missiles against Russia "preventively", because in this case it will lose the support of the United States and Europe.
One of the interlocutors of the publication emphasized that Washington wants to avoid the "collapse" of Ukraine in order to prevent the emergence of "second Yugoslavia".
