Iraq has criminalized the participation of its citizens in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
This was reported by the Arab publication "Ash-Sharq al-Awsat", citing the head of the Iranian Supreme Judicial Council, Fayek Zidan.
The decision was made at a meeting between Zidan and National Security Advisor Qassem al-Araji and members of the commission that prevents the recruitment of Iraqi citizens as soldiers in foreign armies.
There is no specific sentence in the country for such a violation. Last week, however, a court in the city of Najaf sentenced an Iraqi man to life in prison on charges of human trafficking and belonging to an international criminal organization that recruits fighters for Russia.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Baghdad Ivan Dovganych accused Moscow of recruiting Iraqis. His Russian counterpart, Elbrus Kutrashev, acknowledged that Iraqi fighters had joined the Russian army. He declined to give exact figures, but said the recruits numbered no more than a few hundred. Ukraine, for its part, denies unofficial information that it has also recruited its own citizens.
