Romania: Europe must rethink its relations with Trump to survive - 1

Europe must rethink its relations with Donald Trump's United States in order to survive, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coiu said in an interview with CNN. On air, she expressed the opinion that the old way of functioning of the transatlantic partnership no longer works and European leaders have understood this, BTA reported.

„Although Europe cannot break away from the US to guarantee its security, relations can no longer be maintained through nostalgia, but through concrete solutions. A new path of cooperation is needed. We cannot count on the way we have built our partnership and cooperation in the past to represent the future“, added Coiu.

At the same time, the Romanian Foreign Minister welcomed Donald Trump's decision to abandon the announced additional tariffs against eight European countries.

“The business community is pleased that President Trump is not going ahead with his proposals to impose tariffs on European countries. At a European level, it is clear to us that we need to respond together to these problems, given that we have a common market. Individually, each of us has limited negotiating power. The fact that we have over $1.3 trillion in trade and investment in transatlantic relations is an element that will allow relations to remain strong. I am not among the European leaders who believe that we should distance ourselves from the US or that there can be a prosperous, secure future without transatlantic relations“, stressed Oana Coiu.
