Moscow says: Extension of US sanctions against Russia is automatic - 1

The Kremlin has described as "automatic" the United States' decision to extend sanctions against Russia, introduced over the war in Ukraine. Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the extension of the restrictions was a technical procedure, the BBC quoted him as saying.

On Thursday, it became known that US President Donald Trump had signed a decree extending the sanctions regime for another year. The corresponding notification was published in the US Federal Register.

The large-scale sanctions against Russia were introduced in February 2022, shortly after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. They were imposed under then-Democratic President Joe Biden and include restrictions on the banking, energy, technology and defense sectors.

However, the first US sanctions against Moscow date back to 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea. At that time, the US president was Barack Obama, also a representative of the Democratic Party.

The war in Ukraine has been going on for four years, after Russia launched its full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022.
