The AP reports on a new case of the murder of a US citizen by an immigration officer.
The incident took place in March last year, but it is only now becoming clear that a federal immigration agent was involved in the death of 23-year-old Ruben Ray Martinez.
The US Department of Homeland Security has conducted a thorough investigation into the case due to suspicions of a cover-up by the immigration agent. The investigation revealed that on the night of March 15 last year, federal agents were helping to direct traffic in South Padre Island, Texas, when the suspect's vehicle failed to comply with a signal. Later, after being stopped, he suddenly drove off and hit one of the agents. His colleague opened fire and fatally shot the 23-year-old man.
Although information about the shooting was submitted in time, it was not mentioned that a federal agent shot the man.
This brings the number of cases in which immigration authorities have killed American citizens to six, the AP notes.
