The War in Ukraine: Drone Alliance with Finland and Sabotage in Europe - 1

Kiev and Helsinki have signed a historic agreement for the joint production of drones, land robotic complexes and unmanned maritime systems. The official firm commitment, known in diplomatic circles as the “Drone Deal“, was sealed today in Kiev during the summit between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb. The new strategic partnership envisages the relocation of production facilities to the territory of Finland in order to protect the factories from Russian missile strikes. This will allow the integration of Ukraine's real combat experience with the high-tech capabilities of leading Finnish defense companies, including Patria and Summa Defense. In parallel, Helsinki is also finalizing the preparation of a new large-scale package of air defense (AVO) assets for the needs of the Ukrainian army.

Against this background, the authoritative British publication The Telegraph published an investigation, according to which the Russian military intelligence (GRU) has launched a new wave of sabotage at weapons factories across Europe. Western intelligence sources have revealed that the Kremlin is deliberately recruiting local criminal gangs through encrypted platforms such as Telegram, paying them in cryptocurrency. The aim is to carry out arson and sabotage attacks on Kiev’s supply chains without leaving a direct trace to Moscow, testing NATO’s resolve to the point of triggering Article 5. Recent incidents include the arson attack on the Estonian company Milrem Robotics in Tallinn, as well as mysterious explosions at defense bases in Italy and weapons depots in Bulgaria.

The Baltic states’ reactions remain subdued but vigilant. Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal stated in connection with the sabotage investigations that at the moment Tallinn does not see a direct and immediate threat from the expansion of conventional Russian military aggression to NATO borders. However, Estonian services remain on extremely high alert to counter hybrid provocations and cyberattacks.

Meanwhile, a key diplomatic reshuffle took place in Kiev. The new US Chargé d'Affaires in Ukraine, Paul Houston, officially took office today. He is a seasoned career diplomat with extensive experience in international security. Houston began his mission by participating in the National Prayer Breakfast in Kyiv, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, and reaffirmed Washington's long-term commitment to maintaining peace and security in the region.
