Israeli warplanes struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus today, and a Lebanese security source told Reuters that Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, was killed in the attack, BTA reports.
Reuters reporters who were at the scene in the Mezeh district of the Syrian capital saw smoke rising from the wreckage of the flattened building and emergency vehicles parked outside.
An Israeli military spokesman said: "We do not comment on foreign media reports."
Syrian state television confirmed that the consulate building had been attacked. Earlier, Iranian media reported that a building near the embassy was hit.
After the attack by the Iranian-backed Palestinian organization "Hamas" against Israel on October 7 Israel increased airstrikes in Syria against the Iranian-backed Lebanese militia "Hezbollah" and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which support the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
The NurNews agency reported that the Iranian ambassador to Syria was not injured in the Israeli attack.
