The Georgian government today threatened to arrest any demonstrators who try to prevent the parliament from adopting the controversial law on "foreign influence", reported France Presse, quoted by BTA.

"I would like to warn all members of the radical opposition groups that they will have to answer for their acts of violence in court," Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze warned.

Interior Minister Vakhtang Gomelauri was even more categorical: "Blocking an object of particular importance is punishable by up to four years in prison," he warned. "We will use this article (of the law) against anyone who breaks the law, without exception.

The authorities portray the demonstrators, mostly young people, as aggressive crowds, notes AFP.

For her part, the pro-European president Salome Zurabishvili, who is in conflict with the government, called on the demonstrators to be vigilant. "I want to address you so you know. There are plans that won't actually work, but there are plans to organize provocations and drag you into them,'' she said, without elaborating. "So keep a high alert," she urged the demonstrators.
