Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic quotes the words of Marshal of the USSR Giorgi Zhukov, speaking about the draft resolution on Srebrenica, which will be considered at the UN General Assembly on May 23, reports RTS agency.
The projector resolution consists of seven points, the first of which “resolves to declare July 11 as the International Day of Remembrance and Remembrance of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica and to commemorate it annually”. The document also contains a provision that unconditionally condemns any denial of the Srebrenica genocide. The draft includes a request to the UN Secretary-General to “create an awareness-raising program entitled “The Srebrenica Genocide and the United Nations”” and begin its implementation with preparations for the thirtieth anniversary in 2025."
„I accepted my political fate. As Marshal Zhukov said, some in Europe will never forgive us for releasing them. “I am not Marshal Zhukov, I am a small person, elected president of a small but libertarian and freedom-loving country,” said Vucic. He also promised to do everything “to preserve the honor of Serbia”.
On July 8, 2015, Russia vetoed the UN Security Council resolution on the tragic events in Srebrenica in 1995. 10 countries voted for the document proposed by Great Britain, and 4 more, including China and Nigeria, abstained. The resolution characterizes the killings of around 8,000 Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica as genocide and emphasizes that denial of this fact hinders reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Russia has called for the draft not to be put to a vote, noting that it is counterproductive and threatens to worsen the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Balkans.
