Official: Conservatives and nationalists will rule Croatia - 1

The Croatian parliament approved the new coalition government of the ruling conservatives and right-wing nationalists, BTA reported.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković formed the new cabinet together with representatives of the nationalist anti-immigrant movement "Fatherland" after last month's elections failed to produce a convincing winner.

Three out of a total of 18 ministerial seats in the government go to the DP, including the newly created "Ministry of Demographic Affairs".

Speaker of the 151-seat Croatian parliament, or Sabor, Gordan Jandrokovic announced that the new governing coalition was supported by 79 MPs, with 61 voting against.

"I note that the new cabinet has been voted of confidence," he declared.

In the elections in April, Plenković's center-right party "Croatian Democratic Community" (HDO) won 61 seats in the parliament, and "Fatherland" - 14.

For the first time in years, the Croatian government will not include a party representing the ethnic Serb minority, after the "Fatherland" objected to their participation in governance. This raised concerns that the hard-won ethnic balance in Croatia after the Serbo-Croatian war (1991-1995) could be disturbed, notes the Associated Press.
