Algeria and Slovenia requested an open meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday to discuss the situation in the town of Rafah in the Gaza Strip. This was announced on Friday by a source from the world organization for TASS.

On May 6, the Israeli army announced that it had begun preparations for the evacuation of the population in the eastern areas of Rafah. The next day, the military announced the start of a military operation in Rafah and taking control of the border crossing of the same name on the border of the Gaza Strip with Egypt.
Earlier, the international community called on Israel to abandon a full-scale operation in Rafah. In particular, US officials have said they consider such a decision a mistake that will harm the civilian population there and weaken the security of the Jewish state. The Israeli authorities, in turn, insist that the operation in Rafah is necessary for a "total victory" and the defeat of the armed forces of Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
