The man who attacked the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is 39 years old in the center of Copenhagen yesterday, DR TV reported, quoted by bTV. She was punched in the upper right arm, knocking her off balance.

The attacker is a foreign national who claims to have no connection to Denmark but has been working in the country for the last three months of 2023 and lives in a rented accommodation in the town of Brøndby.

He neither speaks nor understands Danish, but has a Danish civil registration number, reports local media "Berlingske".

The hearing of the accused and witnesses in the case took place behind closed doors due to the great public interest.

At the time of the attack, the man was drunk and under the influence of drugs. He has no clear recollection of what happened last night, but claims to know who Frederiksen is and describes her as a "very good prime minister".

The judge's decision was based on a statement by the accused, in which he admitted that he knew who Frederiksen was and what public position she held. Given the fact that the accused has no connection with Denmark, there is a risk that he will abscond, DR TV quoted the opinion of the court.

After the attack, Frederiksen complained of neck pain. Earlier in the day, it became clear that she was taken to hospital due to a minor injury from the impact.

Danish Prime Minister is "safe but in shock" from what happened yesterday. All her engagements planned for today have been cancelled, according to a statement from her office, quoted by DPA.

Witnesses told local media that the 46-year-old prime minister of Denmark managed to walk away from the scene of the accident on her own.

There were immediate reactions from across Europe from European leaders condemning the attack on Frederiksen.

"We condemn this act of aggression and wish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen a speedy recovery. We are deeply shocked by the attack ", states the position of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on the social network X on the occasion of yesterday's incident.
