Thunderstorms and heavy rain caused flooding in Switzerland near Basel and Geneva and in the canton of Vaud on Lake Geneva, DPA reported, referring to the authorities, quoted by BTA.

Police received several hundred reports of flooded basements, power outages and other damage caused by the natural disaster south of Basel last night. This morning, the situation in the area has returned to normal.

In the western canton of Vaud, the fire department was called for help more than 200 times. In the town of Walrus, the river has reached overflow levels, which according to statistics are not expected even once in a hundred years, according to the police. There are no reports of injured people.

In Geneva, severe thunderstorms and torrential rain caused a two-hour suspension of flights.

Room in the air traffic control building of the company "Skyguide" (Skyguide) was affected by the flood. To prevent the control systems from overheating, the airspace was closed shortly after 22:00 (23:00 Bulgarian time) yesterday.

Around 50 arriving and departing flights were cancelled. About 100 passengers were provided with beds and food for the night.

Planes scheduled for today, which were supposed to land in Geneva yesterday but were diverted, have been cancelled. However, no major damage was caused and the city's airport operations have now returned to normal, its spokesman said.

Last week, a landslide caused by heavy rain swept away three houses in the eastern canton of Graubünden and destroyed part of the A13 highway, an important road through the Alps. Of the four people reported missing, a woman was rescued, but a man was found dead. The other two people remain missing, DPA notes.
