The Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni has sent a letter to the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to complain after the publication of the EC report on the rule of law, ANSA reported, quoted by BTA.

In the report, Italy was criticized for the state of the media, in particular the public broadcaster RAI.

"Dear Ursula, a few days ago, as has happened every year since 2020, the EC published its annual report on the rule of law in the EU. The final recommendations to Italy are not very different from those of previous years, but for the first time the content of this document has been distorted for political purposes by someone in an attempt to attack the Italian government. "Some have even gone so far as to claim that the rule of law is at risk in Italy, specifically that freedom of information at RAI is at risk," the letter said.

It added that some media coverage of parts of the report relating to Italy "were clumsy and salacious attacks that could only be undertaken in the devastating context of the systematic use of fake news that is increasingly tainting the debate. in Europe".

"It is a pity that even the EC report on the rule of law and in particular on the freedom of information in the public media was not spared by the specialists in disinformation and misleading,'' the letter added.

"The current Italian government and the parliamentary majority that supports it have not yet taken advantage of the legal provisions in force to renew RAI's top management. The current RAI Board of Directors was appointed by the previous Parliament by a single majority in which "Italian Brothers" took no part, and it is now difficult to see how the present government can be accused of alleged political interference in the management of the RAI," Meloni's letter to Von der Leyen added.
