Tehran warns Gulf states: Expect response if Israeli attack is unacceptable - 1

Tehran has warned Arab states in the Persian Gulf Gulf that it would be "unacceptable" if they allow the use of their airspace or military bases against Iran, reports "Reuters".

The Islamic Republic emphasized that any such move would provoke a response.

The statement comes amid growing concern over possible Israeli retaliation over last week's Iranian missile attack. Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi headed to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states for talks today.

They follow discussions between Iran and Gulf Arab countries last week on the sidelines of an Asian conference in Qatar. Then the Gulf states tried to assure Iran of their neutrality in any conflict between Tehran and Israel.

"Iran has made it clear that any action by a Gulf country against Tehran, whether through the use of airspace or military bases, will be seen as action taken by the entire group, and Tehran will respond accordingly. appropriate way", a high-ranking Iranian official said.

"The message emphasized the need for regional unity against Israel and the importance of ensuring stability," he noted. "It has also become clear that any assistance to Israel, such as allowing the use of a regional state's airspace for actions against Iran, is unacceptable.

US President Joe Biden is expected to hold a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today that will include a discussion of any plans to strike Iran, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Washington hopes to assess whether the response is appropriate, said another person briefed on the discussions.

Last Friday, Biden said he would consider alternatives to striking Iran's oil fields if he were Israel. He also indicated that he would not support Israel striking Iranian nuclear sites.

The Iranian official clarified that Tehran has not discussed the issue of Gulf Arab oil producers increasing production if Iran's is cut off during any escalation.

US news website Axios, citing Israeli officials, reported last week that Israel may attack oil production facilities in Iran in retaliation.

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries - OPEC, which is de facto led by Saudi Arabia - has enough spare oil capacity to offset any loss of supply from Iran if Israeli retaliation knocks out some of the country's facilities.

Much of OPEC's spare capacity is in the Persian Gulf region of the Middle East. Iran has not threatened to attack oil facilities in the Persian Gulf, but has previously warned that if "backers of Israel" intervene directly, their interests in the region will be attacked.

Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia has had a political rapprochement with Tehran in recent years that has helped ease regional tensions. However, relations remain difficult.

Saudi Arabia has been wary of an Iranian strike on its oil facilities since a 2019 attack on its key Abqaiq refinery briefly shut down more than 5 percent of global oil supplies. Iran has denied involvement.

A Western diplomat in the Persian Gulf said that during the meeting between the Persian Gulf countries and Iran in Doha, Tehran called for regional unity in the face of a possible Israeli attack and made it clear that it considers the neutrality of the Persian Gulf states to be a minimum .

The diplomat indicated that Iran will closely monitor how each Gulf country reacts in the event of an Israeli attack, as well as how US bases located in the respective countries are used.

U.S. military installations or U.S. troops are located in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
