Moldova elects a president and votes in a referendum on its European orientation - 1

Voters in Moldova will vote today for a president and on the country's European orientation , reports DPA, quoted by BTA.

Pro-European President Maya Sandu has run for a second term. She also scheduled a referendum to include in the constitution the orientation of the former Soviet republic of Moldova towards the EU.

Security forces in the capital Chisinau revealed before the vote cases of disinformation and vote-buying by pro-Russian forces.

Moldova, which lies between Russia and Ukraine, is a candidate for EU membership, like Ukraine.

Fifty-two-year-old Maya Sandhu is considered the favorite. According to the latest opinion polls, her rating is around 36 percent.

There are 11 candidates in total, and among them there are some who advocate strong economic relations with Russia. Observers believe that Maya Sandu will not be able to achieve more than 50 percent in the first round, and in that case a second round of the presidential elections will be organized, reminds DPA.

Moldova has about 2.5 million inhabitants.

Thousands of Moldovans who live abroad, as well as those who live in the breakaway and Russian-controlled Transnistrian Republic, are called to the polls.

Sections will be open from 7am (local time) until 9pm. The first results are expected late in the evening.
