Spain flood death toll reaches 222 - 1

The number of victims of the floods in Spain has now reached 222 - two more than yesterday, BNR reported. According to authorities, another 82 people have been rescued, bringing the total number to over 36,800.

Forty-one people are still being sought, whose relatives have reported them missing. The unidentified bodies of the deceased are 19.

Against this backdrop, the regional prime minister of Valencia, Carlos Masson, spoke to the media today after last night's demonstration of thousands of people, at which his immediate resignation was demanded.

During a visit to the city of Eliana, he stated that he was aware of and respected the pain of the victims, but refused to comment on his possible resignation from office.

Masson did not specify whether there were any personnel changes in the government he led, announcing that on Thursday he would comment on all political topics during the session of the Valencian parliament.

Earlier, the deputy prime minister in the regional government, Susana Camarero, completely ruled out the possibility of resignations: "This is not an option, we cannot abandon the victims", she announced at a press conference related to a report on the recovery activities after the floods.

In a comment on last night's demonstration Camarero said she and her colleagues understand "the pain of the victims and the families of the deceased".
