Israeli parliament extends state of emergency until December 2025 - 1

The Israeli parliament voted to extend the state of emergency in the country for another year. The measure will be in effect until December 25, 2025, after 29 out of 120 MPs supported the proposal. Seven MPs voted against, and the rest abstained or were not present, BTA reports.

The state of emergency allows the government to issue emergency decrees, which gives it significant executive powers in times of national crisis.

Events leading up to the state of emergency

On October 7, 2023, „Hamas“ fighters and other Palestinian militants crossed the border and attacked Israeli communities, killing more than 1,200 people and taking about 250 hostages. Following these events, Israel declared a state of emergency, which was later extended.

Prime Minister Netanyahu's Christmas Message

On Christmas Eve, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent a message to Christians around the world, emphasizing the importance of international support for Israel in times of war.

“At a time when Israel is fighting on seven fronts, we deeply appreciate the unwavering support of our Christian friends around the world,“ Netanyahu said in an official statement. He stressed that Israel will continue to fight for peace with all who seek peace, but will do whatever is necessary to protect the “one Jewish state“.

“Israel leads the world in the fight against the forces of evil and tyranny. Our battle is not over yet, but with your support and with God's help we will prevail“, Netanyahu concluded, wishing everyone “Merry Christmas and a happy New Year from Jerusalem, the city of peace“.
