Cities in Syria were filled with celebrants late last night after US President Donald Trump announced that US sanctions against Syria would be lifted, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
Spontaneous street celebrations and car processions took place in major cities, and Syrians waved flags and chanted in the squares. The lifting of the sanctions comes after mediation efforts led by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Messages of gratitude and congratulations quickly spread on social media, reflecting a nationwide sense of relief.
"The lifting of the sanctions marks a second victory over the previous regime that destroyed Syria and led to the imposition of these sanctions," said writer and political analyst Qusay Al-Abd. He added that these sanctions have crippled Syria's leadership and its people, preventing any meaningful progress in recent months.
In the historic Al-Midan district of Damascus, hundreds of people took to the streets and chanted in support of the new Syrian government.
"Everyone in the market is celebrating. These sanctions were punishing the Syrian people, not the regime. "The former leadership even used them as a pretext to impose new taxes and fees," said Mohammed Yassin, a shop owner.
Hundreds gathered for a celebration at the historic Clock Tower Square in the city of Homs, in central Syria.
