Turkey has discovered a gas deposit in the Black Sea with reserves of 75 billion cubic meters, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced today, quoted by Turkish media.
The deposit, whose value is estimated at around 30 billion dollars, was discovered in the "Göktepe-3" well, near Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, writes the news website "Türkiye Tüdey", quoted by BTA.
With this deposit, we will meet the natural gas needs of households in Turkey for 3.5 years, Erdogan said during an event in Istanbul.
He specified that the work on the well began on March 27 and ended yesterday, Anadolu Agency reported.
The daily gas production of Turkey has reached about 9.5 million cubic meters from its flagship Sakarya field on the Black Sea. The country is stepping up its energy ambitions both domestically and abroad, Reuters notes.
Turkey meets more than 90 percent of its energy needs through imports. Ankara is seeking to reduce its import costs and increase security of supply by developing domestic resources and expanding international partnerships in oil and gas exploration.
