German Chancellor Friedrich Merz today offered close cooperation to US President Donald Trump in the Oval Office, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
"We have so much in common in our history", Merz told Trump and gathered reporters, speaking in English.
"We owe a lot to the Americans," the German chancellor said, stressing that Germany "will never forget", which is likely a reference to US support for the reconstruction of West Germany after World War II.
Merz referred to Trump's family's German origins, saying: "I think this is a very good basis for close cooperation between America and Germany".
The chancellor thanked Trump for his hospitality and for the opportunity to stay at Blair House, the US government's guest house, which he praised.
Merz recalled that he first visited the White House in 1982, when then-President Ronald Reagan was in office.
"I am very happy to be here again and to offer the United States of America our close cooperation," Merz added.
