The Greek Culture Ministry ordered today the Acropolis in Athens, the country's largest cultural monument, to be partially closed due to the heatwave that has gripped Greece, reported Agence France-Presse.

The ministry specified in a statement that the site will be closed from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. local and Bulgarian time to ensure the safety of workers and visitors,“ exposed to high temperatures.

The four-day heatwave that began on Sunday is the second in Greece since the end of June.

Temperatures in the country are expected to reach 42 degrees today, with the maximum in Athens reaching 38 degrees.

Similar temperatures are expected tomorrow.

The Acropolis, built about 2,500 years ago on a cliff overlooking the capital, does not offer much shade and is visited by tens of thousands of tourists daily.

Last year, about 4.5 million visitors visited the cultural landmark, an increase of more than 15 percent compared to 2023.
