The draft EU budget for 2028 to 2035 includes 4.3 trillion euros for defense, European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius announced today at a joint meeting in Brussels of the European Parliament's delegation for relations with NATO and the alliance's Parliamentary Assembly, BTA reports.
He specified that the European Commission will present the first draft of the next multiannual budget in the coming days.
Kubilius noted that until the new budget enters into force, EU countries have an additional 800 billion euros in the next four years for defense spending. The European Commissioner pointed out that today's war in Ukraine shows what the battles of the future will be like and commented that so far European countries have not learned enough lessons from the changes on the battlefield.
NATO and the EU are children of the Cold War with the task of preserving peace, said Kubilius. According to him, the two organizations are working together to define new defense goals, discussed at the NATO summit in The Hague in June. He noted that most European countries are part of the alliance.
According to the European Commissioner, Russian President Vladimir Putin is most afraid of Ukraine's success. Russians may ask why Ukrainians are more successful, and this is a threat to the Russian regime, summarized Kubilius.
