The Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula erupted after the strongest earthquake in the region since 1952, the Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) reported in the communication application "Telegram", quoted by TASS, writes BTA.

The volcano is erupting right now, the message says, to which a photo of the eruption is attached.

Scientists are observing the outflow of molten lava along the western slope. Explosions and a bright glow are currently visible above the volcano. The footage was posted on the official RAS Telegram account.

Klyuchevskaya Sopka is the highest active volcano in Eurasia. It is a regular cone with a crater diameter of about 700 m. The volcano is located 30 km from the village of Klyuchi in Ust-Kamchatsky District, in the Russian Kamchatka Krai, which is home to about 4,500 people.

This morning, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7 was recorded in Kamchatka. According to the regional Ministry of Health, there were casualties. The authorities have created a regional headquarters to coordinate the work of services and institutions. In the Sakhalin Region, the port of Severo-Kurilsk and a fish processing plant were flooded.
