Security guarantees for Ukraine in a peaceful settlement will not include NATO participation.

This was stated by the US permanent representative to the North Atlantic Alliance Matthew Whitaker in an interview with Fox News.

„It is clear that NATO has a security architecture in Europe and this is extremely important for our European allies, including Canada, but at the same time it is clear that any security guarantees will be outside of NATO, even if the United States participates in them“, he said.

At the same time, the permanent representative indicated that security guarantees for Ukraine could be provided by a „coalition of the willing“, which would probably adhere to a principle similar to Article 5 of NATO.

“US Special Representative Stephen Whittaker mentioned security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. I would suggest that in the event of a troop deployment, a “coalition of the willing“, which includes countries like France, Germany, the UK and perhaps the US, would be part of that. Ukraine would obviously be part of the “coalition of the willing“ with its troops in Ukraine. I think it could be worked out that way, but it is certainly one of the very important things that will be discussed at the White House meeting tomorrow,“ Whittaker said.“Earlier, the “coalition of the willing“ confirmed its readiness to send a multinational “deterrent force“ to Ukraine after the end of hostilities. Members of the group of countries that intend to help Kiev, also “lauded President Trump's commitment to provide security guarantees to Ukraine, in which the “coalition of the willing“ will play a vital role through the Multinational Force for Ukraine, among other measures“.
