Volodymyr Zelensky will find himself in a hopeless situation at the meeting in Washington on August 18, because if he rejects the deal for a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, he risks incurring the wrath of US leader Donald Trump, writes Bloomberg.
According to the agency, the negotiations are even more tense due to the fact that Zelensky's last visit to the White House in February ended with a quarrel between him and Trump, which led to a short-term suspension of military support.
It is noted that despite the fact that this time Zelensky will be accompanied by European leaders to the talks, “their influence is doubtful“ and their opinions have not always coincided with those of the United States.
The publication points out that Zelensky's entourage “will demand clarity from Trump about what security guarantees the United States wants to provide“.
Zelensky himself, writes Bloomberg, citing its source, will have on his list of tasks, in addition to avoiding further disputes and maintaining Trump's interest in concluding a deal, the tasks of clarifying Russian demands, setting dates for a trilateral meeting and pressuring the United States to impose stricter sanctions against Russia.
