Lollipops are the most harmful to teeth among sweet foods, warned orthodontist Victoria Radko.
According to the dentist, lollipops are the most harmful to enamel, provoke the development of caries and, if consumed frequently, can even influence the development of incorrect tooth alignment in children.
„Lollipops are concentrated sugar that remains in the mouth for a long time, enveloping the teeth in a sweet environment. Unlike chocolate or marshmallows, which we eat quickly, the lollipop is in contact with the enamel for 10-15 minutes. During this time, the acidity in the mouth changes dramatically, bacteria begin to actively multiply and destroy tooth tissue“, Radko explained.
However, as the doctor noted, it is not necessary to completely abstain from sweets. She advised choosing alternatives that do not damage the enamel. For example, candies and chewable lozenges with the natural sugar substitute xylitol, which does not cause cavities and even has a mild antimicrobial effect.
Radko reminded that it is better to eat dessert after a main meal than to snack throughout the day. This will reduce the likelihood of caries. After consuming sweets, it is useful to rinse your mouth with water or an unsweetened drink to reduce acidity and remove sugar residues from the teeth.
