American neurologists Saef Izzi and Sandro Marini are of the opinion that traumatic brain injuries can provoke the development of brain cancer, writes Daily Mail.

According to the doctors, the probable cause of brain tumors was revealed during a study they co-authored. The specialists studied 75 thousand cases of mild, moderate and severe traumatic brain injuries. Izzi pointed out that 87 patients who received moderate or severe injuries developed brain tumors within five years.

„I find these results alarming. Our work has shown that traumatic brain injury is a chronic disease with long-term consequences“, said the neurologist.

Marini added that severe and moderate brain injuries do increase the risk of developing tumors. However, he believes that the likelihood of such an event is still small. However, he believes that patients who have suffered head injuries should be monitored not only during treatment, but also for several years after its completion.
