Dear Sofia residents, they are preparing the next crisis for us. Bigger than the one with transport. This is what Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev wrote on Facebook and added: “This time the stake is half a billion leva, which must be spent transparently and responsibly over the next 5 years“.

According to him, 7 key contracts for garbage collection and cleaning in 20 out of 24 Sofia districts expire this year. He adds that if they do not announce new public procurement procedures on time, entire neighborhoods may remain buried with garbage.

“We at Sofia Municipality are ready. Our documents are ready. But for more than a month and a half (with a maximum period of 14 days) we have been waiting for the Ministry of Finance and its subordinate Public Procurement Agency to give the “green light”, which is required by law”, Terziev specifies.

The mayor points out that by law the inspection should have been completed on April 9, but this did not happen. “I sent two letters to the Minister of Finance Temenuzhka Petkova. Today I sent a third one – insisting that the procedure be moved forward within 3 days. If there is no reaction, I will refer the matter to the Court of Auditors and the National Assembly.

The stakes are huge – nearly 500 million leva for the next 5 years. There are people who do not want this money to be managed transparently and honestly“, Terziev also writes.

The Sofia Mayor calls on the Ministry of Finance to do its job and not delay the procedures.

Last week, two companies (“Zauba“ and “Green Partners-BKS“), which have a contract with the Sofia Municipality for garbage collection and cleaning of public places, warned that they would stop work due to delayed payments.
