Toyota is about to excite off-road enthusiasts with the launch of a new, more compact SUV model - Land Cruiser FJ. The company first hinted at the return of the iconic name two years ago, and now new, intriguing details have emerged that point to an earlier premiere than expected.
According to the Japanese publication Creative 331, the model is planned to be presented in Japan in the second quarter of 2026. Under the hood of the new FJ will work a 2.7-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, which is already familiar from the base versions of the Toyota Hilux. This powertrain will generate 163 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque, providing reliable power for off-road adventures.
The new FJ will be similar in size to the Toyota Corolla Cross, but surprisingly - a little shorter. At 4.35 meters long, it will be even shorter than the Corolla Cross, positioning it as a direct competitor to models like the Ford Bronco Sport in terms of size. This compactness, combined with off-road capabilities, will make it ideal for urban environments and rough terrain.

Recent reports point to the use of the IMV-0 platform, which is used in the Hilux Champ. However, there is a problem - this platform does not meet US safety standards, which calls into question its use for the North American market.
It was previously assumed that the model could receive the robust TNGA-F architecture, which underpins the Land Cruiser, Tacoma and Tundra, but there is still no official confirmation. The choice of platform will be key to the FJ's positioning in different markets.
The SUV is also expected to be sold in North America, where it will likely be offered with other engines, including a gasoline and hybrid version, tailored to local requirements and preferences. It is possible that Toyota will use a 2.4-liter turbo engine with a capacity of 326 hp for this market, offering a more dynamic drive.
According to the publication, the premiere of the Land Cruiser FJ may take place earlier than expected - as early as the end of October, during the mobility exhibition in Japan. If this happens, it will be a pleasant surprise for all Toyota and off-road fans.
