Although SUV models are stubbornly trying to take over every free inch of asphalt, classic family hatchbacks refuse to surrender the lead. For buyers of used cars, they remain the sensible choice, but the new annual study by the What Car? and MotorEasy publications shows that not every purchase is a “hit in the top ten“. While the average level of solidity in this segment rises to an enviable 92.6%, some popular brands register disturbing results that should light up like a red light for every potential owner.

The absolute triumph this year is for the KIA Ceed (2018-2025). The Korean model proves to be a true fortress of peace, with a modest 8% of complaints about defects. And while critics often argue that the Ceed is not the most exciting car to drive under the sun, it is undoubtedly the safest haven for the family budget. Immediately after it are the Bavarian BMW i3, which surprisingly holds the lead despite its age, and the current Honda Civic, which, although not the strongest in the brand's history, still outperforms most of the competition.

However, while one side of the Korean automotive industry is celebrating, the other is facing serious criticism. The big loser in this year's ranking is Hyundai.

Hyundai's electric models literally “anchor“ the bottom in reliability. The electric Hyundai Ioniq (2016-2022) has been awarded the sad title of “the most unreliable model“ in its class. Owners are shedding tears en masse because of problems with the main battery – the heart of the car, the repair or replacement of which can cost a fortune. The situation is no rosier with its modern successor Hyundai Ioniq 5, which also fell into the anti-rating along with the current Volkswagen Golf.

It is interesting to note that the modern scourge of modern cars is no longer mechanical wear, but capricious electronics. Most defects in models such as Opel Astra, Toyota Corolla and Skoda Scala revolve around multimedia bugs and software misunderstandings in on-board systems. That's why experts advise: before counting the money for a car, click through the menus on the screen at least as carefully as you listen to the engine.

Ultimately, if you're looking for a family companion that won't let you down at the most inopportune moment, the KIA Ceed seems like your guy. However, if you've got your eye on an electric Hyundai, you'd better prepare for unexpected downtime at the service station and a serious check of the condition of the traction battery before it's too late.
