Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani discussed ways to restore the Syrian economy to the global financial system with government representatives in Washington, the Arab republic's Foreign Ministry announced.
According to the ministry, al-Shaibani met with representatives of the US Treasury Department, as well as with the US special representative for Syria, Tom Barak. “During the meeting, they discussed ways to restore the Syrian economy to the global financial system, which will help strengthen joint efforts to combat the financing of terrorism,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
Al-Shaibani arrived earlier in Washington as the head of a Syrian delegation. This is the first official visit by a Syrian foreign minister to the United States in 25 years. As previously reported, al-Shaibani intends to discuss negotiations with Israel in Washington on a possible security agreement, as well as the final lifting of US sanctions against the Syrian Arab Republic.
