In 14 days: Over 300 fined in Sofia for improper crossing - 1

A 100 leva fine for improper crossing has been threatening pedestrians since September 7. There have already been over 300 fined in the capital, and over 13 thousand checked across the country.

Among the most common violations is crossing outside the pedestrian crossing.

"Among the other common violations are crossing a red light, suddenly stepping onto the roadway, this is very dangerous between parked cars", says Viden Dimitrov – inspector at the State Department of Internal Affairs, “ Traffic Police” department to Nova TV.

It is important to know that while crossing it is prohibited – talking on the phone, chatting or wearing headphones or other distracting devices.

"There is also a ban on crossing directly in front of and behind a bus, trolleybus, tram that has stopped at a stop", adds Inspector Dimitrov.

In the capital, over 300 pedestrians caught in violation have already parted ways with 100 leva each.

"Distraction, especially when crossing, poses risks, and for the legislator to come to a decision to introduce such a norm, it means that the situation on the territory and not only in the country has been analyzed," explained Commissioner Maria Boteva, head of the "Traffic Police" department in the General Directorate of Traffic Safety.

Inspector Dimitrov believes that a large part of the people are still not familiar with the new sanctions and that is why the police often issue warnings.

From the beginning of the year to July, 34 pedestrians died, 59 passengers, and 146 drivers, according to statistics from the Ministry of Internal Affairs on road traffic injuries. Pedestrians were the cause of 59 serious accidents with two deaths and 60 injuries. The most common cause - a pedestrian suddenly stepping onto the roadway. For comparison, violations by drivers led to 169 serious accidents.
