Bulgaria is in trouble again. And again the volunteers are on the front line. In the summer, the volunteers played a key role in extinguishing the fires. They threw themselves against the elements with their bare hands. During the COVID crisis, they were in hospitals. They are rescuing those lost in the mountains. Now they are selflessly fighting the floods again.
Because the state has not done its job.
Because someone has allowed illegal construction under the table.
Because a second person has built a private hydroelectric power plant.
A third person has not cleaned the riverbeds.
A fourth person has cut down the forest.
Complete irresponsibility and robbery. And the volunteers risk their lives to save someone else's life. Untrained, unequipped, but dedicated, they throw themselves into protecting the lives and property of everyone. One of them was even fired from his job because he allowed himself to be absent because he was putting out a fire.
This was posted on her Facebook page by the leader of "Unruly Bulgaria" Kornelia Ninova regarding the water disaster in parts of the country. Here are more of Ninova's words:
Parasites in parliament, finally adopt the Volunteerism Law. (While I was an MP, I introduced it twice and GERB rejected it twice.) How long will you delay it? If you had to increase your salaries or buy luxury cars, you would vote at night. But volunteering does not bring you privileges, and that is why you are in no hurry.
Do at least this little good deed to guarantee these people basic security.
P.S. I myself have volunteered in several disasters and volunteered as a nurse in a Covid ward. I know what I am talking about firsthand because I have seen it with my own eyes.
