Burgas is building a pedestrian crossing with artificial intelligence - 1

Burgas will get its first intelligent pedestrian crossing, which will use artificial intelligence to detect pedestrians and warn drivers. The facility will be located on Blvd. “Hristo Botev“, one of the busiest intersections in the city, near schools and a kindergarten, Nova TV reported.

The project was proposed by engineer Stoyko Andreev, who explained that the system will use cameras, sensors and algorithms with artificial intelligence to recognize only people who have stepped on the pedestrian crossing.

“When a pedestrian steps on the crossing, light sensors activate a flashing yellow light, which warns drivers that there is a person in the pedestrian zone. The system is not activated by passing cars or animals, which makes it extremely accurate“, explained engineer Andreev.

According to him, the technology was developed by a Latvian manufacturer and has an efficiency of 99-100%, unlike other similar solutions that work partially.

Initially, several possible locations for building the path were considered, with Blvd. “Hristo Botev“ being chosen due to the large flow of pedestrians, including students and the elderly. The system will be powered by direct current, instead of solar panels, to ensure continuous operation.

“The project was supposed to be implemented this year, but due to lack of funds it was postponed to next year. We expect Burgas to have its first intelligent pedestrian path in 2026“, added Andreev.
